In 2016, the animated comedy Sausage Party, created by veteran comedy duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, pushed all the boundaries of good taste (we say only food orgy!) and struck a chord. With its raw and accurate humor, the film not only brought us rampant food porn in the truest sense of the word, but also set completely new standards in the degree of depravity in animated movies on the big screen.

This also paid off at the box office: with worldwide box office receipts of about $141 million, the $19 million “Sausage Party” released the movie “South Park” at the top of the charts after 17 (!) years. the most successful movies with a rating for the US – Adult of (although it was overtaken here by the anime hit “Demon Slayer – The Movie: Mugen Train” in 2020). Nevertheless, a sequel that has been discussed several times has not gotten off the ground to this day, which may also contribute to the controversy surrounding the unpaid overtime of many animators.
But now it’s clear: “Sausage Party” Continues As A Streaming Series On Amazon Prime Video, which gives us more insight into the secretive (and especially slovenly) behavior of groceries in a supermarket. The American trade journals report unanimously.
Sequel or prequel?
The series “Sausage Party” will be titled “Sausage party: Foodtopia“, will initially consist of eight episodes and will air in 2024 (and thus a full eight years after the theatrical film) on Amazon Prime Video. However, it is still unknown if this is actually a direct sequel to the original or if we will get a prequel that tells an earlier story.
In any case, it is certain that many characters from the film and their well-known original speakers will returnincluding Seth Rogen (“Bad Neighbors”) as Frank Sausage, Michael Cera (“Superbad”) as Frank’s friend Barry, Kristen Wiig (“Ghostbusters”) as Frank’s hot dog bun Brenda, Edward Norton (“Fight Club”) as Jewish bagel Sammy Bagel Jr. and David Krumholtz (“Numb3rs”) as Muslim flatbread Lavash. New to previously unknown roles include Will Forte (“Nebraska”), Sam Richardson (“Veep”), Natasha Rothwell (“Insecure”) and Yassir Lester (“Black Monday”).
From the original team
Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will once again co-produce “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” and already have excellent connections to Amazon’s streaming division through the series hit “The Boys,” which they co-created. With an official, wonderfully exaggerated statement, they are already making people want their new project:
“In the past, film was superior to television and with our remarkable work we have reached the pinnacle of what is possible with film. But now that film is all dead and television is the eternal king of entertainment, we’ve decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary crew in the soon-to-be-legendary masterpiece of the series, Sausage Party: Foodtopia. It has just as much heart, twice the puns and three times the food sex. In other words, it’s exactly what the world needs right now.”
Showrunners for the sequel to “Sausage Party” are Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rogen and Goldberg. Meanwhile, production is overseen by Conrad Vernon, one of the two directors of “Sausage Party”. So rest assured that “Foodtopia” is in the same vein as the underlying big screen adventure.
