At least 26 people have been killed in floods and landslides on the Indonesian island of Sumatra due to heavy rains. Eleven people are still missing, Abdul Muhari, spokesman for Indonesia’s disaster management agency, said on Monday. Rescue efforts are hampered by persistent rain and power outages.
As Fajar Sukma of Civil Protection in West Sumatra reported, 23 people died in Pesisir Selatan district alone. Six people are still missing here. The Padang Pariaman district was also hit hard by the storm; three people were found dead here. There is a possibility that the number of victims will continue to rise, Sukma explains.
By Sunday, rescuers had gained access to most of the affected areas and were providing food, medicine and tents to people there. Hundreds of houses, bridges, mosques and other public buildings were damaged by the storms.
Landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season. The problem has been exacerbated in some places by deforestation. (AFP)
