All things are good that ends well? Not at all. Everyone who reads this investigation report must have strong nerves. It is about Batik Air’s domestic flight BTK6723 from Kendari to Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, on January 25, 2024. The captain of the Airbus 320 is tired and wants to take a nap.

For this reason, the 32-year-old pilot asks his co-pilot and his assistant for permission to sleep about half an hour after takeoff. He gives the green light and takes control of the plane, but after a short while he shakes his head and walks away. There are 153 passengers on the driverless jet.

The co-pilot’s reason

Officials said that communication with the cockpit was not possible for 28 minutes, during which time the plane went off course. Then the captain woke up and realized that his first officer was also asleep. He regained contact with the ground and corrected the flight path.

The co-pilot later attributed the incident to a major lack of sleep. “The deputy commander has one-month-old twins. In the report, he stated that his wife looked after the babies and helped him when he was at home.

“Serious incident”

Batik Air announced that two pilots were temporarily suspended from duty as a “preventive measure”. Batik Air wrote that the company takes safety into account on all flights and that the incidents are thoroughly investigated. The airline is committed to complying with all recommendations of the aviation safety authority.

KNKT spoke of a “serious incident” and used it as an opportunity to demand tighter controls on all flights in the country. The report said airlines should conduct regular cockpit checks and ensure their staff is getting enough sleep. (nim/SDA)
