More than twenty people were injured – some seriously – in an incident at a coal-fired power plant in the Russian republic of Tuva in Siberia. A spokesperson for the regional government said this to the Interfax news agency on Wednesday. Tuva Governor Vladislav Khovalyg declared a state of emergency in the region due to the accident.
According to him, there are no deaths or missing persons. The injured were taken to hospital by plane. In the town of Schagonar, with 12,000 inhabitants, the heat supply was turned off due to the accident, despite winter temperatures.

According to media reports, a fire broke out due to an unknown cause and led to an explosion. The thermal power plant was severely damaged by the fire.
The incident is part of a series of sometimes serious failures in municipal infrastructure in Russia. A record number of major power plant outages were reported across the country this winter; there were frozen or burst district heating or hot water pipes. As early as mid-February, Novaya Gazeta counted three million Russians affected by such incidents.
The backdrop is a lack of infrastructure investment in the world’s largest country, which is investing about a third of its budget in the military this year against the backdrop of its war of aggression against Ukraine. (sda/dpa)
