Road traffic: Municipalities want a lower speed limit of 30 km/h on major traffic routes in urban areas

With 25 votes in favor and 15 abstentions, the Council of States adopted a motion by Peter Schilliger, national councilor of the Lucerne FDP, on Wednesday. It calls for respect for the “hierarchy of the road network” and the functions of streets in and outside the city. In concrete terms, this concerns speed limits.

On traffic-oriented streets in urban areas, the speed limit should generally be 50. Schilliger states that this is the only way to guarantee the flow of traffic, both for motorized individual transport and for public transport and freight transport. Speed ​​limits of 30 km/h can be introduced on secondary roads if local authorities wish.

Association of cities against this rule

Until now, cities are allowed to introduce a speed limit of 30 km/h on main roads. In Freiburg, for example, this already applies to 60 percent of the surface area. But the transport politicians in parliament don’t like that.

“We don’t want communities to be forced into a corset,” Christoph Niederberger, director of the Swiss Association of Municipalities, told “Tages-Anzeiger” in February. In many communities, 20 mph on traffic-oriented roads is an accepted reality.

The motion does not infringe on the autonomy of the municipalities and cantons; Schilliger, on the other hand, justifies his concern.
