The Federal Council took the decision on Wednesday, it announced after its meeting. He thus adopts the decision taken by the EU Council at the end of December. Accordingly, all controls at the air and sea borders with Bulgaria and Romania will be lifted. However, land border controls will continue.
This step represents a further development of the Schengen acquis. In the future, Romania and Bulgaria will also be able to issue Schengen visas themselves. According to the Federal Council, experience with Croatia’s accession to the Schengen area has shown that such a decision “cannot be expected to result in a significant increase in migration”.
Romania and Bulgaria have been EU member states since 2007.
The Schengen Area visa-free zone currently includes 27 European countries with a total of approximately 400 million citizens. This includes 23 EU countries and four partner states: Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. (SDA/them)
