Currywurst is a popular snack classic. It would be new that you can even bribe police officers with this delicious dish.

It is precisely this suspicion that the Public Prosecution Service in the German city of Hannover is now investigating. 17 police officers are said to have repeatedly accepted invitations to eat currywurst. “Bild” and “Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung” report this unanimously.

Internally, the alleged bribery scandal is now referred to as the “currywurst case”. Those involved are said to have repeatedly stuffed their stomachs with meat over a period of ten months at the invitation of a service manager who provided training for the officers. The meals for the officials are said to have cost a total of about 2,000 euros, the equivalent of about 1,887 francs.

Politicians are concerned about the matter

What ulterior motive could the speaker have had for the currywurst orgy? “We currently assume that he hoped for positive reviews for his lessons through the invitations,” says Oliver Eisenhauer, media spokesperson for the Hanover Public Prosecution Service, “Bild”. The man apparently wanted to obtain further orders from the Central Police Directorate (ZPD).

The matter is now a political concern. The CDU wanted to know what the government of the state of Lower Saxony is doing to combat corruption in the police and judiciary. The matter became public. The state government had reported a sharp increase in the number of suspected corruption cases in 2023, with 17 suspects charged in one case. That’s how the matter came to light.

The currywurst is something of a culinary haven in Germany. When car manufacturer Volkswagen introduced a ban on the popular dish in company canteens in the summer of 2021, there was great outrage. Even former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (79) joined the debate. Under #SavetheCurrywurst he campaigned to preserve the “power bar of skilled workers in manufacturing”. The cult dish has been offered sporadically at VW since last year.
