The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) announced in Nuremberg on Wednesday that this had more than quadrupled to 1.5 million people compared to the previous year. This annually prepares the German government’s migration report.
As a result, 2.7 million people came to Germany in 2022, while 1.2 million people left. This results in the highest net immigration since migration statistics began in 1950. “This has to do with catch-up effects after the Corona years 2020 and 2021, but especially with the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, which forced millions of people to flee ”, explains Susanne Worbs from the Bamf Research Center.
According to information from Bamf, in 2022, 41 percent of all immigrants to Germany came from Ukraine, followed by Romania (8 percent), Poland (4 percent) and Turkey (3 percent). Most people moved to Romania, Ukraine, Poland and Bulgaria.
