Germany and Britain have called for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza war. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) and her British counterpart David Cameron demanded in a joint article for the British “Sunday Times”: “Our goal cannot simply be an end to today’s fighting. It must be a peace that lasts for days, years, generations. We therefore support a ceasefire, but only if it is permanent.”
US President Joe Biden had previously called on Israel to pay more attention to the civilian population. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, is sticking to his line of continuing the war against the Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip until a ‘total victory’ is achieved.
However, Cameron and Baerbock did not support an immediate ceasefire, but showed understanding for such demands. “It is an understandable response to so much suffering, and we share the view that this conflict should not be allowed to continue. That is why we supported the recent humanitarian rifts,” the PA news agency quoted from the article.
The two foreign ministers further stated that Israel has the right to defend itself, but must adhere to international humanitarian law. “Israel will not win this war if its operations destroy the prospect of peaceful coexistence with the Palestinians.” The Israelis have the right to remove the threat from Hamas. “But too many civilians have been killed. The Israeli government must do more to distinguish between terrorists and civilians and ensure its fight focuses on Hamas leaders and operatives,” Cameron and Baerbock said. (sda/dpa)
