In the western Ukrainian region of Transcarpathia, a deputy detonated several hand grenades during a village council meeting. At least 26 people were injured, local police said Friday.
Six injured people, including the perpetrator, had to be taken to hospitals. Police video shows the man entering the meeting room and suddenly throwing several grenades. The incident took place in the village of Kerezky, almost 40 kilometers from the Romanian border.
Initially, nothing was known about the background of the crime. According to consistent media reports, the deputy belongs to the presidential party Servant of the People. The SBU secret service began investigations, including terrorism.
Since fighting broke out between Moscow-backed eastern Ukrainian separatists and the army in the spring of 2014, numerous weapons have been in circulation in the Eastern European country. The Russian invasion of almost 22 months ago has caused arms circulation to increase again. The Zakarpattia region is located in the far west of Ukraine and borders Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. (SDA)
