Heavy snow has caused significant traffic chaos in Austria and southern Germany.

As in southern Germany, heavy snowfall caused considerable traffic chaos in Austria on Saturday. There were massive disruptions, especially in the west of the country; In Vorarlberg and Tyrol, 50 centimeters of fresh snow or even more had fallen in many places in the mountains overnight. But there were also problems in Upper and Lower Austria and in the south, according to a report by the APA news agency.

In Vienna, the outer ring road (A21), which is important for through traffic, had to be closed in both directions around noon because several vehicles got stuck. The closure lasted until the early evening.

Snow chaos in Central Europe

The Austrian car club ÖAMTC in turn reported extremely winter road conditions, especially on the northern side and eastern edge of the Alps. Many important connecting routes have been difficult to navigate since early in the morning and there have been repeated traffic jams and accidents. “Unfortunately, the situation on Austrian roads did not deteriorate during the afternoon hours. Numerous trees have snapped under the weight of the snow and need to be removed,” an ÖAMTC spokeswoman said in response to an APA request.

The onset of winter also caused significant disruption to rail traffic. The so-called German Corner between Salzburg and Kufstein or Munich was closed until Sunday.

Heavy snow also paralyzed parts of southern Germany on Saturday. Southern Bavaria was particularly affected: in Munich, for example, more than 40 centimeters of fresh snow fell on Saturday night, according to the German Weather Service. The airport in the capital was closed and the central station was also closed. (AFP)
