Germans show self-irony: ‘Even we can get ahead’

Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland – Germany could have fared worse in the European Championship group draw. The major media in our neighboring country agree on this point.

Sport1 writes about “DFB-Glück”. And the photo also shows a “lucky group”. Germany’s largest newspaper shows self-irony, given the recent poor performances at the European Championships and the World Cup: ‘Even we can get ahead.’

The trade magazine Kicker writes about a ‘feasible group’ and sees a ‘steep chance’ to get back into the knockout phase after the two group results at the World Cup in 2018 and 2022 and the narrow advance at the European Championships in 2021.

Completely relieved

New Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann is more diplomatic: “It is a very interesting group, the opening match against Scotland will be emotional. Hungary and Switzerland also have some Bundesliga players, some of which I have trained myself. It will be a small derby against Switzerland against a direct neighbor. It is not a group of death, but there are no easy opponents. And we want to move forward.”

National team director Rudi Völler is relieved: “I’ll be honest, there were constellations, including with Italy, that we were spared.
