Murat Yakin is happy with the Swiss group at the 2024 European Championship.

The Swiss national team will compete against hosts Germany, Scotland and Hungary at the 2024 European Championship. In conversation with SRF, Nati coach Murat Yakin is happy with the draw: “We can look forward to a challenging group.”

The highlight of this group stage is clear for Yakin: “We are looking forward to playing against Germany for the first time in a European Championship final. We live for moments like this. Football is alive here, the atmosphere will be great.” All of Switzerland can look forward to the match on June 23 in Frankfurt.

Yakin also has respect for Scotland and Hungary. The Scots have great fans and a strong team. “They beat Spain in qualifying,” the coach warns. The Hungarians won a surprising number of matches and also showed good performances in the Nations League.

“There will be adjustments”

A few days ago, the SFV announced that they would go to the European Championships with Murat Yakin as coach. When asked about the past few days, the coach is surprisingly open. “We were able to draw conclusions. There will be adjustments because we want to tighten the screws again in the staff in one place or another.”

Yakin, on the other hand, is not at all interested in the contract situation: “The contract is not a priority. It is important to me that I am there and can go to the European Championships with this team.”

Freuler and Widmer are happy

The draw seems to have brought joy among the Nati players too. «It’s fun to play against the hosts. It will also be great for the fans, because the stadium in Frankfurt will burn down. Scotland and Hungary also play good football. A great group,” says Remo Freuler of the SFV.

The match against Germany will be special for Mainz defender Silvan Widmer: “I think it’s a really cool group and I’m looking forward to all the matches. But of course especially for the match against Germany. Of course I know a lot of players from the Bundesliga. An exciting group in which we should not underestimate any of the three opponents.” (bjl)
