France further restricts smoking in public and increases the price of a pack of cigarettes. The smoking ban will be extended to beaches, parks, forests and around public places such as schools, Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau announced in Paris on Tuesday.
Disposable e-cigarettes should be banned. The price of a pack of cigarettes will rise from about eleven euros today to 13 euros in 2027.
The point is to reduce tobacco consumption from public spaces and remove its banality, the minister said. Every day in France, approximately 200 deaths can be attributed to tobacco use. The population should therefore receive more support in quitting smoking. For example, pharmacies should be able to prescribe nicotine replacement therapies, the minister said when presenting the anti-smoking strategy.
In France, people still use cigarettes relatively often. According to the latest EU statistics, the share of people in France who smoke daily is 22.4 percent of the population. In Germany, 15.9 percent smoke every day. The EU average is 19.7 percent and in Switzerland 19.1 percent. (SDA)
