The hooligans set fire to a police car.

A five-year-old girl and a woman were seriously injured in a knife attack in the center of the Irish capital Dublin. The Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported this on Thursday, citing police and rescue workers. Two other children were slightly injured. A suspect arrested at the scene was also said to have been seriously injured.

According to the report, the man, about 50 years old, attacked the children while they were in line at a daycare center. The injured woman is said to be an employee who intervened to protect the children. Several passers-by then managed to overpower the man and hold him until the police arrived.

According to a police spokesperson, no other suspects were initially wanted in connection with the crime. A motive was initially unknown, but the police did not assume a terrorist background. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar was shocked and thanked rescuers who quickly arrived on the scene. Justice Minister Helen McEntee called it a “horrific attack on three innocent children and a woman”.

Huge riots broke out in the center of the city

After the knife attack, Dublin descended into pure chaos. Images from social media show a police car and a bus in flames. Or how hooligans steal from shops and break windows. The footage also shows a group of people hitting police cars. One of the hooligans jumps around on the hood.

Social media shows that the hooligans are rioting because they think the man who carried out the knife attack is from Algeria. They started their riots as a protest against migration. The police have not yet confirmed the origin of the suspected perpetrator.

Police spokesman Drew Harris told Irish broadcaster RTE that the “crazy hooligan faction, driven by right-wing extremist ideologies” had caused “embarrassing scenes” in the city center. A number of police officers were also injured during the riots. Harris called on hooligans to “go home” – and warned against listening to social media disinformation.

There are several Blick reader reporters on site. One person described the situation as ‘violent’. He reports: “The mood is very tense. You see a lot of masked people.” A second reader reporter also confirms this.
