World premiere in France: Instagram and Tiktok offer alarm buttons for bullying victims

Victims of bullying must be referred via the alarm button to a reporting point where psychologists and lawyers can advise the victims.

This means that a hotline is immediately available for those affected, French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said on Thursday during a visit to a school in Paris. “Bullying is a plague that ruins the lives of many students,” Borne emphasizes.

Anyone who clicks the new ‘safety button’ will be directed to a national hotline where psychologists and lawyers advise victims about online hostility and discrimination. The advice service under number 3018 is available nationally every day from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

After several cases of suicide among young people in France, all students from the third grade onwards are required to complete a questionnaire about possible experiences of bullying. “This way we can measure the mood in schools and students can become aware when a situation is no longer normal,” says Borne.

Take bullying seriously

Society must tackle this issue more intensively. “There are still too many adults who are unaware of the extent and impact of bullying,” says Borne. She met several children at school who reported experiences with bullying.

“Let’s not trivialize what children experience,” is the slogan of an advertising campaign in online services that has been trying to draw attention to the problem since Friday. It shows parents who do not take their children’s reports of bullying experiences seriously.

The French government announced at the start of the school year that it would take stronger action against bullying in schools. In the future, students who bully others will have their access to online networks such as Facebook and Instagram blocked.

Empathy courses based on the Danish model

Education Minister Gabriel Attal also wants to introduce so-called empathy courses based on the Danish model from next year. These courses are intended to make children and young people aware of the bullying problem. In addition to students, parents and teachers also need to be better informed about the dangers of bullying.

In France, it is estimated that a tenth of students experience bullying. Several suicides by young people who had previously complained of persistent teasing had brought the subject much attention.

One day after the start of the new school year, 15-year-old Nicolas hanged himself in his room. His parents had previously complained to the school management that they had not responded adequately to their complaints.

President Emmanuel Macron had given the subject “top priority” for the new school year. His wife Brigitte has been committed to combating psychological violence in schools for some time.

How parents recognize bullying

Bullying often happens in secret. Victims remain silent, fearing that the teasing will worsen if they tell their parents. Younger children are less able to hide their emotions, while in adolescents a case of secret bullying can last a very long time.

Signs that your child is being bullied include:

  • It’s retreating
  • It’s depressed or tired
  • He no longer enjoys going to school
  • School performance is declining
  • aggressive behavior, increased open conflicts with classmates
  • unexplained stomach ache or headache
  • nervous reaction to messages on the smartphone

Parents should talk to the child and ask, for example: “Is everything going well at school? I can tell you that you don’t like going there anymore.” If parents discover that their child is being bullied, they can ask the teacher to talk to them.

Expert Bettina Dénervaud believes that therapy to deal with bullying behavior is especially useful in long-term cases. But only when the bullying is over.
