Ski star wants sixth overall World Cup victory: Shiffrin chases next skiing legend

What else drives Mikaela Shiffrin? The 28-year-old has long won everything there is to win in ski racing – multiple times. But the records don’t concern probably the best female ski racer of all time.

Even when she matched ski legend Ingemar Stenmark’s 86 wins last winter (Shiffrin now has 88 wins), she didn’t panic. On the contrary: you almost got the impression that she was ashamed that she had overtaken the Swede. Even the magic number of a possible 100 wins leaves Shiffrin cold.

And yet Shiffrin has an inner drive. «If there is something that makes me long for it, it is the general World Cup. That has always been one of my biggest goals.” You should know: Shiffrin has already won the big crystal ball five times. “But the motivation doesn’t disappear just because I start over every year,” she clarifies.

Pröll recognized Shiffrin’s potential

Should Shiffrin actually win the sixth major crystal ball, she would overtake Annemarie Moser-Pröll (70) – the Austrian is one of the greatest ski stars in history, although she retired in 1980 at the age of 26.

Shiffrin met her many years ago: “I didn’t have nearly as much success then as I do today. She said, “If you keep this up, you’ll overtake me.” No one at the time expected what would happen to me.

Seventh reindeer for Shiffrin?

The current winter did not start as desired for Shiffrin. But sixth place in Sölden does not worry her. Why? There are still 44 races to go. And there is much to indicate that Shiffrin will launch her first perfume brand in Levi (Fi) next weekend. The slope suits her, the girlfriend of ski moose Aleksander Aamodt Kilde (31). She has already won six reindeer in Lapland; they are the traditional live prizes that the slalom winners receive.
