14 kilometer high smoke column: enormous ash cloud above Russian megavolcano

The Russian megavolcano Klyuchevskoi on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula spews fire and ash. The state news agency Tass reported this on Thursday, citing the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Accordingly, a 14 kilometer high column of smoke was recorded.

Local authorities responded to the volcano’s renewed activity by closing all educational institutions in two nearby towns. In addition, parts of the two road connections to the town of Klyuchi, which is only 30 kilometers from the volcano summit, were closed.

The authorities cited the ash fall in the region as the reason for the measures. The residents of the villages have to stay at home because the ash is gradually covering everything. Civil protection warned the population to avoid the volcano and not to drive to and from Klyuchi.

Volcano alarm also in Italy

With a height of about 4,800 meters, the Klyuchevskoy volcano is one of the highest active volcanoes in Eurasia. The first increasing activity was already registered in June. But it’s only been a few weeks since the volcano has been spewing clouds of ash almost every day.

A supervolcano is not only making headlines in Russia. In September, a new study became public in which experts expressed fears that a mega-eruption could be imminent in Italy, not far from Naples. (no)
