Strong earthquake shakes Japanese peninsula Surveillance camera captured deadly bus crash in Venice – what is known so far

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the Izu island chain south of Tokyo. The Meteorological Agency on Thursday withdrew the warning of a one-metre high tsunami wave a few hours later. Earlier, a 30 centimeter high tidal wave was observed on the coast of the volcanic island of Hachijo-jima. There were no reports of possible damage. The residents were now asked to move away from the coast.

The late morning (local time) earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean near Torishima Island at the southern end of the island chain. The uninhabited island is located about 580 km south of the capital Tokyo. The Izu Islands extend southeast of the Izu Peninsula. The Far East of Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. (sda/dpa)
