Climate scenarios thanks to artificial intelligence: This is what the Rhine Falls of the future might look like

Today Rhine Falls…

Climate change causes new extreme weather events every year. Temperature records are being broken one after another in Switzerland; In the last two years alone, Swiss glaciers have lost ten percent of their ice.

Environmental protection organization WWF is now using artificial intelligence to visualize how the Swiss landscape will change over the next 60 years if no action is taken to prevent this.

The scenarios are not entirely imaginary: WWF reports that the images were created based on scientific data. Various pessimistic climate predictions have been fed into AI.

Will the Matterhorn be snowless in 2085?

WWF’s images of Switzerland in 2085 are frightening: The tree line and permafrost limit are increasing by up to 1000 meters. Snow and ice are only visible at the top of the Matterhorn.

The Rhine Falls are almost completely dry, algae is growing in the pools, and the landmark has long ceased to be a tourist magnet. The Aletsch Glacier is smaller and narrower; At the end of the old ice giant, a lake forms, just like the Rhone Glacier today.

Olive tree instead of vine

Lavaux will also be affected by climate change: according to WWF, Chasselas grapes cannot withstand change; Instead of vines, olive trees that adapt to the dry and hot climate now grow.

Advert

WWF showed these pictures to various passersby at the Rhine Falls. They reacted with discomfort. A woman says: “Horror!” Another visitor said: “This is really sad.” (what is that)
