In the trial surrounding the violent death of 14-year-old student Ayleen, the suspect was sentenced to life imprisonment for murder by the Giessen regional court. The court also noted the particular gravity of the guilt and ordered preventive detention for the 30-year-old for charges including murder and attempted rape resulting in death.

The 30-year-old defendant was accused of kidnapping the girl from her hometown of Gottenheim near Freiburg in July last year, taking her to a forest near Langgöns in the Giessen district and trying to rape her there. Ultimately, he allegedly strangled the girl and sank her in a lake. The man is charged with murder, attempted rape resulting in death and coercion, among other things.

“Society must be protected from such perpetrators”

The Public Prosecution Service had demanded a life sentence for murder and considers the guilt particularly serious. In addition, Chief Public Prosecutor Thomas Hauburger asked the court to order preventive detention for the German, who was convicted of a sexual offense as a teenager and had been housed in a psychiatric institution for years.

This enforcement measure had no effect, Hauburger said, adding: “If we cannot reach an offender, he must be taken into custody because our society must be protected from such offenders.” The man should not be given the opportunity to kill another girl.

Defense lawyers also assumed murder

The 30-year-old himself said in a statement read out by his lawyer that the student had provoked and insulted him, so he got angry and killed her. Like Hauburger, his lawyers also assume murder, but in their plea they reject the special gravity of the guilt, because it cannot be proven that the suspect attempted rape and that he has a sexual motive for the crime.

After the arguments, the 30-year-old spoke for the first time on day 14 of the trial and briefly expressed his regret: He joined the defense, “and I’m sorry,” he said.
