We will soon be heading south through the tube again: after the derailment of a freight train in the Gotthard Base Tunnel, individual passenger trains will be running across the tunnel again from Friday. The first passenger train departs from Zurich Main Station on Friday at 5:33 p.m.
The SBB is limiting passenger traffic to weekends for the time being: it goes south on Friday evening and north on Sunday evening. On the three autumn peak weekends, there will be two more connections to the south on Saturday and one to the north on Sunday, the SBB announced on Thursday.
This raises the question of how people on the trains would be evacuated if a breakdown or accident occurred. The actual evacuation concept involves leading travelers out of the tunnel via the other tube of the railway tunnel. But now the western tube is not fully accessible.
Nevertheless, the evacuation will take place via the west tube, the SBB has announced. The SBB distinguishes whether the rescue should take place due to a malfunction or a fire in the tunnel.
In the event of a fire, travelers would go from the east tube to the west tube via the accessible connections. There they would be evacuated from the tunnel by train: if the train stopped south of the derailment point at Faido, it would head back towards Ticino, otherwise it would be driven towards the northern portal.
If the train were to stop at the Faido multi-use point, passengers would be evacuated there by bus through the access tunnel.
In the event of a breakdown, i.e. if a passenger train no longer continues and no longer runs
can be towed away, another train drives into the tunnel, stops in front of or behind the stranded person and picks up the passengers there. This means: The evacuation would take place via the eastern tube.
Even if passenger trains now run through the Gotthard again, their journey time will only be slightly reduced by 15 to 30 minutes, because the trains have to travel slower for safety reasons. But the number of seats will be increased. According to SBB, there are 900 more places during the autumn holiday weekends. However, the SBB recommends a seat reservation. For safety reasons, overcrowded trains are not allowed to pass through the base tunnel. (sf)
