On November 6, 2022, David von Ballmoos (28) played his last match for the Bern Young Boys. He was then out for nine months with a knee injury (bone marrow edema in the right knee). After three games for the U21, Von Ballmoos played his first game since the injury about two weeks ago in the 1-0 cup win against Neuchâtel Xamax.
Now he surprisingly found himself in the penalty area in the champions’ 2-1 defeat to St. Gallen in the Super League. Surprising because the Bernese only announced a week ago that Anthony Racioppi (24) is the new number 1 for the defending champion.
“I have been away for a long time (eleven months, editor’s note), so it is important to put everything into perspective,” Von Ballmoos explains after a brief reflection on the question whether his commitment also came as a surprise to him. “It just takes time, I can’t expect to come back and play every three days. I should slowly get back into the rhythm. We have found a good solution.”
What this solution looks like and whether there is now rotation in goal for the Young Boys – but Von Ballmoos did not want to say anything about that. “A good solution might have been the wrong expression. My wish was that I would do every match again as soon as I got back. Of course I try to take advantage of my opportunities. Because I have the ambition to become number 1 again. And in the end it’s a competition with Anthony, that’s for sure.”
In any case, it was not up to Von Ballmoos that YB had to suffer its first defeat of the season in the league in St. Gallen. On the contrary, he always kept his team in the game and was the best Bernese player in Eastern Switzerland. “It was far too little to take anything with me to St. Gallen. I blame us for losing the match,” the original Berner said angrily after the defeat during his comeback. “Of course I imagined the outcome differently – although it was a nice feeling to be in goal again. ” (jts)
