A young man punches and kicks another several times as the attacker convulses before being thrown to the ground. These scenes took place in a Chechen prison in mid-August. The criminal is none other than Adam Kadyrov (15), the son of the Chechen ruler Ramzan Kadyrov (46).

Nikita Shurawel (19) was previously sentenced to two months in prison for “insulting the feelings of creditors”. He is said to have burned a Koran in front of a mosque in Volgograd on behalf of the Ukrainians for 10,000 rubles (95 francs). Shortly afterwards, Shuravel was transferred to a Chechen prison without any legal basis.

Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, had ordered the case to be transferred to the Chechnya department. The reason: “Numerous applications from residents of the Chechen Republic” were received, asking to “be recognized as victims,” according to the investigative committee’s statement at the end of May. Shuravel has been awaiting trial since then.

“I am proud of Adam’s actions.”

Shuravel had already complained in mid-August that he had been beaten up by Adam Kadyrov. On Monday, Kadyrov Sr. posted itself a video of the attack on Telegram.

“He hit him and did the right thing,” Kadyrov writes of his son. And: “Anyone who violates the Holy Scriptures must be severely punished,” he continues. “I am proud of Adam’s actions,” it continues. His son ‘developed ideals of honor, dignity and the defense of his religion.’

As it later became known, Ramzan Kadyrov and his son visited the suspect in custody. He left the 15-year-old alone in the room with Shurawel, whereupon the Chechen let his fists do the talking.

Positive reactions to bold action

And it is not only father Kadyrov who praises his son’s violent behavior. Akhmed Dudayev, 36, Kadyrov’s Information Minister, noted: “We understand that we live in a constitutional state, there are laws and a constitution. But in this case there are also religious feelings, traditions and customs.”

Duma deputy Adam Delimchanov (54) also defended the beater: “Without a doubt, I consider my cousin’s actions to be right and just! He behaved like a real man and a worthy son of his people! Nothing is more important and sacred to a Chechen than his religion.”

Valeri Fadeyev (61), head of the president’s Human Rights Council, also does not directly condemn Kadyrov’s son. Instead, he says of the alleged Quran burning in Shurawel: “This is a serious crime. Such provocations are unacceptable in a multi-denominational country. Rules also apply to the detention of suspects that must be strictly adhered to. I hope there will be a fair judgment against the accused Quran burner.”

Will Kadyrov’s son be punished?

But for some Kremlin officials and TV propagandists, Kadyrov appears to have gone too far. Human rights official Tatjana Moskalkova (68) writes on Telegram that burning the Koran is a punishable offense, but does not justify obstinacy. “During the investigation in the detention center, he must of course be held according to the rules established by law,” she explains.

Even Yevgeny Popov, who regularly hosts political talk shows on state television, criticizes Kadyrov: “You can’t beat people up. This is illegal. The punishment for the perpetrator (referred Shurawel note d. Red.) is determined by the court. And only from the court.”

Journalist Xenia Sobchak (41) takes a tougher stance against Kadyrov. She confronted him over the phone and asked if he had punished his son. “No, he did well, he behaved like a real man.” If there is a trial in which Adam Kadyrov is found guilty, Kadyrov’s son will be punished “to the full extent of the law,” Kadyrov reportedly said. But the question is whether the son of the most powerful man in Chechnya will actually be prosecuted.
