The disillusionment was harsh: a year ago, Health Minister Alain Berset (51) had to announce a huge increase in health insurance premiums after a long time. An increase of no less than 6.6 percent on average. This increase was mainly due to the corona pandemic.

Now things could get even worse. Healthcare costs increased by 7.9 percent in the first half of 2023. Health insurer Santésuisse has calculated in advance that health insurance premiums will have to rise by 8 to 9 percent in 2024 to cover the increased health care costs.

So a new premium shock is planned. Between 6 and 10 percent is expected. Federal Councilor Berset and Anne Lévy (52), director of the Federal Office for Public Health (BAG), will tell you exactly how much it will be at a media conference today at 2 p.m.

The left wants more premium cuts

The debate about how to deal with the increasing pressure on premiums has long erupted. The recipes are varied. For example, the left is pushing for higher premium reductions and has a popular initiative in the making. The premium burden may not exceed 10 percent of the household income. The SP is also introducing a new popular initiative for a unified fund.

The center, in turn, wants to combat the growth of healthcare costs with a cost reduction initiative. Parliament has presented an indirect counter-proposal with cost and quality targets, but without any specification on how to achieve them.

FDP calls for budget health insurance

The FDP, in turn, advocates the creation of a budget health insurance fund from which certain services – such as homeopathy – could be excluded. And Zurich SVP health director Natalie Rickli (46) even discusses the abolition of compulsory health insurance.

Santésuisse director Verena Nold (60) sees savings potential in, for example, generic medicines, which are twice as expensive in Switzerland as abroad. In addition, the GP model or other savings models should become the standard model. You would then have to explicitly surrender your free choice of doctor.
