Legal setback: next setback for Trump

Donald Trump is currently fighting on several legal fronts.

New legal defeat for former US President Donald Trump: In the course of a sexual assault defamation lawsuit in New York, the US Justice Department has amended a previous assessment. The department has now concluded that it will no longer declare the Republican as immune to alleged defamatory statements about American author E. Jean Carroll during his tenure.

There is no evidence that Trump was sufficiently motivated by an intent to “serve the United States government” when he denied sexually assaulting Carroll and made other statements about the woman, according to a Tuesday (local time) report. letter from the ministry.

Convicted of sexual abuse

Carroll accuses Trump of assaulting and raping her in a New York department store in 1996. The 77-year-old denies the allegations — even during his time in the White House.

However, in a civil trial in May, a jury found evidence that Trump assaulted and sexually assaulted Carroll. The jury did not uphold the rape charge.

Trump can be prosecuted civilly

Shortly after Trump’s conviction for millions of dollars in damages, Carroll announced she would take the ex-president back to court — this time for libel. She cited his statements after the verdict as the reason. Trump filed a so-called libel counterclaim.

The move by the Justice Department now means Trump can also face civil prosecution for statements he made while in office. So far, the lawsuits have revolved around statements following his deselection. The Justice Department now cited, among other things, that Trump later repeated in a similar form statements he had made as president. Trump denied the incident and insulted Carroll on a CNN program shortly after the sentencing. Trump wants to run again in the 2024 presidential election. (SDA)
