In the small town of Raguhn-Jessnitz, the AfD gets its first full-time mayor in the eastern German state of Saxony-Anhalt. In the second round of the elections on Sunday, AfD MP Hannes Loth won against non-party candidate Nils Naumann.
The 42-year-old Loth received 51.13 percent of the votes, the city announced on its Facebook page in the evening. According to the provisional election results, 31-year-old Naumann received 48.87 percent. According to the information, the turnout in the municipality in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district was 61.51 percent.
About 7,800 people were eligible to vote. Just a week ago, Robert Stuhlmann, Germany’s first AfD district administrator, was elected in Sonneberg in southern Thuringia. This further fueled the debate over the AfD’s current high, which stands at around 20 percent in polls across Germany. (sda/dpa)
