About 250,000 people took part in a Pride parade in Mexico City, according to the city government. Carrying rainbow flags and some extravagantly dressed, they flowed peacefully through the center of North America’s largest city on Saturday. “Mexico City is an exemplary space where freedom, rights and diversity are exercised,” interim mayor Martí Batres wrote on Twitter.
In 2009, the Mexican capital became the first municipality in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage. On Friday, the city hosted a mass wedding where 105 same-sex couples said yes, according to the registry office. In addition, 131 people officially changed their gender identity.
This took place in the context of the so-called Pride Month, which is celebrated in June in many parts of the world. This serves, among other things, to make lesbians, gays, bisexuals, trans and queer people (LGBTQ) visible; it is shown for their equality. (sda/dpa)
