Do you remember the spelling reform of the 1990s? Spaghetti should become spaghetti. Made from mayonnaise mayonnaise. This did not happen, the reform failed. Compared to that time, Genderstern and Genderdoppelpunkt represent bottom-up reform.
I am not a fan of such spellings as “Creditor must file a request for arrest.” But it’s not the end of the world either. Anyone who wants to use a gender star should do so. Documents and orthographies are always children of their time. Or is someone seriously mourning the young lady?
Language thrives on freedom and good will. Talk about freedom, how the beak has grown. And from mutual goodwill: in other words, to communicate in such a way that no one offends anyone, but is also not intentionally misunderstood.
However, mock debates are problematic. Fuel is added to the fire by the same circles that warn against spoiling the language, adding fuel to the fire with slogans a la “gender terror, wake up madness and cancel culture.” In the spirit of Donald Trump, first they create problems, then they fight, and finally they complain that the real problems of the country have faded into the background.
Such campaign maneuvers are as successful as they are transparent: it is easier to rage against a gender star than it is to present solutions to transphobia, integrate people with disabilities, or fill a shortage of teachers.
But in the end, words and deeds matter.
