As early as February, Russian war president Vladimir Putin (70) announced that the new Sarmat ICBM would be ready for use this year. Also called Satan II by NATO and capable of carrying multiple warheads, the RS-28 missile has a range of 18,000 kilometers – enough to hit any target in the world.
“This year, the first launchers of the Sarmat missile system will go into operation,” Putin said a year after invading Ukraine. After a series of failed tests, the time has now apparently come. Speaking to uniformed officers at the Kremlin on Wednesday, Putin revealed that the Sarmat missile systems “will be deployed in the near future”. The Sarmat ICBM – 35.5 meters long and 3.5 meters in diameter – is considered the deadliest weapon development since the end of the Cold War.
Sarmat missiles clearly seem too big for the Ukraine mission. With their readiness for action, Putin openly threatens NATO, the West and the whole world. “I can imagine the sour look on the faces of the Pentagon generals when they received this news,” said Viktor Baranets, a war correspondent for the Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda. “Soon Sarmat systems will begin combat use in Russia with a new heavy missile. This was announced by Vladimir Putin on June 21.”
According to Baranets, a Sarmat can be armed with 10 to 15 nuclear warheads, including so-called Avangard hypersonic missiles, which are said to reach 27 times the speed of sound — more than 33,000 kilometers per hour. “There is no missile defense system in the world,” says Baranets, “that can intercept a missile flying at such insane speeds.”
A Sarmat has a take-off weight of 208.1 tons and can carry 10 tons of nuclear warheads. According to Baranets “the perfect weapon of a new generation”. The three-stage rocket carrier is so powerful that it can launch satellites into orbit. Baranets speaks of so-called “orbital bombing” – when a missile does not fly to the target by the shortest trajectory, but on any route, even over the North or South Pole, bypassing all installed missile defense systems and radars.
Immediately after launch, the missile rises to an altitude of 14 kilometers, locks onto the target and then disables the radar system. At the top of the runway, the glider becomes independent – and must remain agile despite extreme speeds and temperatures of over 1500 degrees. The flying object is then in a plasma bubble, which makes it extremely mobile and at the same time shielded from the outside world. When approaching the target, the projectile falls to a height of only 10-15 meters, invisible to air defense systems.
Baranets waxes lyrical about the rocket’s “total destructive power.” 15 Sarmat warheads, each with 750,000 tons of explosive force, that’s more than 11 megatons of TNT: “In simple terms, a Sarmat can destroy an area the size of France or the US state of Texas.”
Sarmat is a “highly capable strategic weapon,” General Glen D. VanHerck, 62, commander of the US Air Force’s Northern Command, warned in March. The new Russian missile system justifies “the critical importance of a modern and reliable US strategic deterrent”.
