Former US President Donald Trump is due to appear in court a few months before the presidential election in the United States in connection with another defamation lawsuit brought by American author E. Jean Carroll. The trial will tentatively begin on January 15, 2024, by a New York federal judge, according to an order released Thursday.
Shortly after Trump was ordered to pay millions in damages for sexual assault and defamation in May, writer Carroll announced that she would once again take legal action against former presidents. The reason for this was the insults that Trump made on CNN the day after the verdict against Carroll.
A New York grand jury ruled on May 9 that Trump had assaulted and sexually assaulted Carroll in a luxury New York department store in 1996. The jury also ordered Trump, 77, to pay a total of $5 million (about CHF 4.46 million) to the 79-year-old for defamation. Trump appealed the verdict.
The day after the verdict, Trump again denied Carroll’s account of the incident on CNN, accusing the author of it being a “fabricated story”. Trump also claimed he never met Carroll and called her a “crazy”.
