These 9 mistakes make camp beginners

The Federal Statistical Office recorded more than 4.18 million overnight stays at the camp in 2022 – the number nearly doubled in a few years.

Camping is still a trend with us. After nearly four million overnight stays at Swiss campsites in 2021, that number rose to 4.18 million last year. This trend is likely to continue this year, especially as delivery issues in recent years seem to be easing for campers as well.

But where more people are vacationing side-by-side in a fairly small area, the potential for conflict increases. Especially since there are many newcomers who have never been to the campsites. Blick lists nine typical campsite mistakes that not only beginners should avoid:

1. Don’t greet your fellow campers
It is watched with eagle eyes, especially by those who are new to the campsite, especially regular guests. The ultimate way to reduce skepticism and spread a good mood is with a friendly Grüezi or Hello. By the way, this is already part of the good neighbor nursery.

2. Slam sliding doors
A sound that can drive the neighbors crazy during the long lunch break: Ritsch-Ratsch-Peng! The boom in the camper VW Bulli and the like means that sliding doors are now as much a part of the typical sound of every campsite as the buzz of tent zippers. That’s why our tip: Feel instead of just pure force when closing the door or zipper – because then it will also work with neighbors!

3. Family washing dishes
Unless you have a luxury caravan or don’t trust completely non-eco-disposable tableware, you won’t be able to avoid doing the dishes during your camping vacation. Having kids help mom and dad do the dishes can be a change. But there is not enough space in the sink in the toilet – so wash with a maximum of two people and please always clean the sink later.

4. Block installation
In high season when everyone is cramming into the plumbing morning and evening and queues are already starting to form, the heavy shower goes down pretty badly. The same applies to heavy visits to the toilet during peak hours. Those who are comfortable in the bathroom and toilet prefer to avoid off-peak times.

5. Fast forward on the field
The gravel roads in the campsites invite you to drift quickly at the next bend. Don’t bother! On the one hand, there is a speed limit of 10 km/h in local squares – also for bicycles. You never know if a gang of playing kids will jump out of place – and the dust being thrown makes everyone uncomfortable. By the way: Pedestrians always take priority in campsites.

6. Make the area a party zone
Of course, a beer and music is part of the end of the day for the campers. However, a cozy meeting should not turn into a wild party with shouts. Soften your voice and music, especially at lunchtime and at night so you don’t have to go to the gardener in the morning.

7. Smoking instead of grilling
Barbecuing is part of the campsite, just as paella is part of a vacation in Spain. But be careful not to emit too much smoke unnecessarily (for example, due to unsuitable lighters or excessively greasy food to grill) so you don’t cover the whole place with smoke. The following also applies to disposable grills: consider a litter so the heat doesn’t immediately leave unsightly marks on the lawn.

8. Make room for the nudist zone
If the temperatures allow, many guests wear swimsuits and slippers as wardrobe items. No less, nudists are not welcome (unless they are in designated nudist areas). T-shirts must be worn when visiting a kiosk, bar or restaurant.

9. Go over other people’s packages
The number one deadly sin at every campground and a guarantee to alienate campers: Anyone who sees the neighbor’s plot as the official pathway or shortcut to the toilet considers himself a total novice. The plot is considered a living room and, so to speak, a rented property, violations seen as violations of the peace.
