Maja Dahlqvist (28) just caused outrage at the cross-country skiing world cup final with the “Sweden package”. The action led, among other things, to the fact that the two-time world champion still got the sprint shot in the last race – to the detriment of the Swiss Nadine Fähndrich (27). This time, however, Dahlqvist is the self-proclaimed victim.
And it’s about money. At the Swedish championships, the 28-year-old and her teammate Louise Lindström (22) each received a hardware store voucher for third place in the team sprint. The value of the voucher: 250 Swedish kronor, the equivalent of 22 francs.
“That’s a joke!” Dahlqvist ranted to “Expressen” after the race. The Swede was already upset at the presentation of the awards before the ceremony: “Do I really have to stand here with a check for 250 kroner that is so big that it reaches to my knees? It just gets embarrassing and stupid.”
And she doesn’t stop: “I don’t understand why that is. 250 kroner? It would have been okay if they put a zero on it, but even then it wouldn’t have been particularly glamorous.” She immediately explains: “I think at 14 I won more in some competitions.”
The highlight of the story: because of a forgotten competition chip, Dahlqvist also has to pay a fine. And that is – you guessed it – higher than 22 francs. “So now I’m making a minus, even though I won a medal. That’s just bad.”
Dahlqvist probably wouldn’t have done well even if he had placed higher. There were 1,000 crowns (about 87 francs) for gold and 500 crowns for the silver medal.
