The new Mercedes E-Class isn’t even on the market yet, while the Stuttgart automaker is still pursuing the station wagon version, which continues to be referred to as the T-model. Thanks to the EQE model family, although there is no electric version, there are economical gasoline and diesel engines with and without spark plugs.
Like the E-Class sedan, the 4.95-metre-long station wagon has been slightly increased in width and wheelbase over its predecessor. T-model? This has meant tourism and transportation since the first Mercedes station wagon in 1977. The design is more evolutionary than revolutionary, but the LED light units at the front that make the Mercedes star shine are truly new.
However, the decisive factor in a station wagon is the flexible loading volume. Depending on the position of the rear seatbacks, the loading volume is between 615 and 1830 liters behind the power tailgate. Plug-in hybrids take up battery space, so there are still 460 to 1675 liters left.
Inside, the second row has more room for legs, head and elbows. After Ferrari or Porsche, now in Mercedes: In addition to the centre, overhead and cockpit display, there is also an optional passenger display. As in the sedan, the car key can stay at home in the station version, as your own smartphone or smartwatch unlocks, locks and starts the car. Standard air suspension on the rear axle can also be ordered as an option for the front axle.
The driving range remains almost the same as the station wagon compared to the sedan. Two plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) come with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo in two power levels: the 312 hp (230 kW) E 300e is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, while the Mercedes E 400e with 381 hp (280 kW) quad It is a wheel drive vehicle. The electric motor contributes 129 hp (95 kW) to both. This means that the workstation wagon can reach speeds of up to 250 km/h and be driven more than 100 kilometers on all-electricity with a battery capacity of 25.4 kilowatt-hours (kWh) – more than double the previous model. . Plug-in hybrids with diesel engines and a high-performance version from Mercedes sports subsidiary AMG will come. The latter now has to make do with six cylinders, eight cylinders have been deleted for the E-Class.
Base engines without PHEV start at 204 hp (150 hp) as a petrol engine or 197 hp (145 kW) as a diesel. A 48-volt electrical system and a 23 hp (17 kW) starter generator should provide both performance boost and economy through recovery. Manual transmissions are completely outdated, nine gears are changed automatically. Offering six cylinders, three liters of displacement and 330 hp (243 kW), the E 400d diesel known from the S-Class will likely be the most powerful pure combustion engine.
The new E-Class will debut as a sedan this summer, but you’ll have to wait until autumn for the station wagon. Likewise, prices that are not yet known.
