For the first time since 2009, the final of the Women’s Champions League will be held in a sold-out stadium. The final in Eindhoven will take place in front of 34,100 fans.
When Barcelona and Wolfsburg compete for club football’s most important trophy on June 3, it will be in front of a worthy audience – a packed house. That was not always the case in women’s football.
The UEFA Women’s Champions League was renamed for the 2009/10 season. The competition was previously called the UEFA Women’s Cup. The last time this was played, Duisburg met Russian team Swesda Perm in their home stadium. 28,112 spectators filled the MSV Arena to the last place. A year later, when the final was not held in a finalist’s city, 10,372 spectators attended.
A lot has happened since then. 87,192 fans watched the 2022 European Championship final between England and Germany at Wembley. Last weekend saw a new record in a national competition in England’s FA Cup final: 77,390 spectators made the pilgrimage to Wembley for the final between Chelsea and Man United. Meanwhile, the attendance record in women’s football dates back to the Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Wolfsburg a year ago. 91,648 fans then filled the Camp Nou. (dti)
