“I want to fight for the title at Wimbledon”

Things are looking good again: Andy Murray still has high goals this year.
Marco Pesciosports reporter

Even after countless injuries, difficult comebacks and many sporting setbacks in recent years, Andy Murray (35) has not lost his great charisma. And certainly not his joke, which makes him so popular with the fans. The latest example: when tennis prodigy Mirra Andreeva (16) publicly raved about Murray’s beauty “in real life”, the Scot had a typically dry answer ready: “Imagine how good she will be if she still has her eyes done! “

Not only in Madrid did Murray give the impression that he tries to enjoy every second of the tour to the maximum. Looking back at his eventful final years, which produced a fat injury record but little success, it’s understandable.

Murray finally seems to be back to a point where his body seems to be moving along. The current number 42 in the world is simply enjoying tennis again. Even at the Challenger level, where he last competed in Aix-en-Provence, France, winning the tournament outright. The victory was his first since 2019 (Antwerp, in the final against Stan Wawrinka). And also his first at the Challenger level in 17 years and eight months, setting a new record for the largest gap between two titles at the second highest level.

Wimbledon like a dream

“I’m very, very happy with the win – and we’ll continue next week,” Murray said in Aix-en-Provence, visibly relieved. And at the same time, he repeatedly expressed a great desire to be on the big stage.

Murray wants to attack again. First in Rome (Thursday against Fabio Fognini/ATP 46), then at the French Open, later at his favorite tournament in Wimbledon, where he won two of his three Grand Slam titles.

In order not to jeopardize a start in London, he might even do without Paris. But that is still an open question, he says. ‘We are waiting. Actually, I would really like to be at Roland Garros. Who knows, it may be the last time. But I also have the ambition to fight for the title at Wimbledon.”

He admits that this may sound “unrealistic” to some. Still, the mere fact that Murray dares such a run is good news for the tennis world, which continues to yearn for more Murray moments.
