St. Galler GLP Boots Infectiologist Vernazza

Pietro Vernazza should not stand for the St. Gallen GLP.

The GLP of St. Gallen does not want Pietro Vernazza (66) to run for National Council – at least not for her party. This is surprising: four years ago, the former chief physician of the cantonal hospital of St. Gallen came second, narrowly missed the elections and even ran for election to the Council of States. Vernazza – now of retirement age – would have liked to try again this year. But now everything is different.

During the corona pandemic, Vernazza – an infectious disease specialist in HIV – repeatedly criticized individual measures taken by the Federal Council. He also brought up “differentiated contagion” early on as an alternative to blanket lockdowns. His ideas sometimes received devastating criticism from scientific colleagues.

‘It was a solid match’

The doctor suspects that his attitude towards Corona is also the reason why the party has refused him the candidacy for the National Council. “My Covid statements did not reach the party board, at least a majority of the committee,” the doctor told the “St. Dagblad Gallen. Before he was nominated, he was told that he was not actually wanted.” was a set up game,” Vernazza adds in the “NZZ.”

The cantonal party for its part is covered. There were more interested parties than places on the list, says GLP canton chairman Ramon Waser (28) about the “St. Dagblad Gallen. That is why the members decided democratically in a secret, written election”. It is possible that the GLP wants their list rejuvenate and that is why Vernazza did not make it.

GLP has to fight for a seat

The St. Gallen GLP currently holds a seat on the National Council with Thomas Brunner (62). Defending will not be easy. Brunner has already announced that after only four years he has had enough of Bundesbern and will no longer participate. The previous bonus therefore expires. Four years ago, the GLP also benefited from a list connection with the St. Gallen Mitte party, which in turn lost a seat. The question is whether a list connection will be created again under these boards. The GLP therefore has to collect enough votes itself to keep the seat.

And Vernazza? He flirts with a change of party. It is true that such a “still far away”, according to the “St. Gallen newspaper. “But I have to think seriously about whether I want to continue to be involved with the Green Liberals.” (brother)
