Hackers have published several data packages from the Basel Department of Education (pictured: Director of Education Conradin Cramer) on the darknet.

The group had published several data packages with a total size of 1.2 terabytes (1200 gigabytes) on the dark web, the education department announced on Wednesday.

As a spokesman for the department said when asked by the Keystone-SDA news agency, the data was uploaded by the ransomware gang BianLian. The gang had already put data packages from the Swiss chocolatier Läderach on the dark web last October. Whether the data is sensitive cannot be said at this time, the spokesperson said.

At the end of January, a computer in the education department was hacked. This with the aim of extorting money. According to the statement, the department did not respond to a monetary claim from the blackmailers. The canton of Basel-Stadt has filed a complaint against unknown persons with the public prosecutor’s office. (SDA)
