FC Stade Nyonnais will not receive a license for the Challenge League.

FC Stade Nyonnais is in the middle of the promotion race. Now the Swiss Football League is throwing a spanner in the works for the residents of Vaud. The license application for participation in the Challenge League in the 2023/24 season has been rejected. Now Stade Nyonnais is going up the barricades.

As the residents of Vaud announced in a statement, they will not travel to St. Gallen for Saturday’s scheduled match against SC Brühl. “Although the board is aware of the consequences of this decision, it takes full responsibility.” The club writes that it is intended to express the rejection and misunderstanding of the decision of the Swiss Football League.

Relationship with Challenge Leagues

The reason for the rejection of the license application is said to be the family connection between Nyonnais president Sassoun Sirmakes and the Challenge League club Stade Lausanne-Ouchy. His father Vartan is the head of the club’s management there. Until a few months ago, he was also president of Stade Nyonnais. Apparently a conflict of interest for the league.

The league will officially announce on Monday which clubs will receive the licenses for the various competitions. The clubs have already been notified. Stade Nyonnais has already announced that it will appeal against the decision of the Swiss Football League.

Stade Nyonnais is currently in second place in the Promotion League behind FC Luzern’s second team. However, since the people of Lucerne are not allowed to advance to the Challenge League, the Vaud people would be given preference. Without a permit, however, the Vauders must remain in the third highest class. (mab)
