ATP will soon rely solely on technology instead of line judges

Soon to be a thing of the past in men’s tennis: the line judges.

The “out” calls will soon be a thing of the past in men’s tennis. From next season, the ATP players’ association will rely on technical solutions to determine whether a ball was in the field.

Instead of classic line judges, an electronic live system will be used on the entire ATP Tour from 2025 to monitor the lines of the field with a technological rather than a human eye.

“This is a milestone for our sport and one that we have not reached without careful consideration,” said ATP CEO Andrea Gaudenzi. “Tradition is at the heart of tennis and linesmen have played an important role over the years.” However, the organization has a responsibility to embrace innovation and new technologies.

Since 2017, testing has been going on with this technology, which has been used more and more recently due to the coronavirus pandemic. (SDA)
