The Winnipeg Jets with Nino Niederreiter come to a surprising success. The underdogs from Canada won 5-1 away against the Vegas Golden Knights, the number one team in the Western Conference. De Churer can be credited with two assists.

Morgan Barron, the Churer’s teammate, experiences a moment of shock. Halfway through the first period, the striker throws himself into the fight for the Vegas goal and gets a skate in the face of goalkeeper Laurent Brossoit. The slip hits the right side of the 24-year-old’s face and he immediately enters the cabin. But in the 27th minute, Barron was back on the bench – he was sewn up with over 75 stitches!

‘Blood trail from target area to bench’

It could have had a terrible ending. “Fortunately, the skate missed my eye. I think the first thought was that I could look out of sight and that was the most important thing,” says the lucky one after the game.

“He looked like he had been attacked by a shark. It was scary. Suddenly we saw a trail of blood, practically from the goal area to the bench,” says teammate Adam Lowry (30). Head coach Rick Bowness is pleased that Barron came off relatively lightly: “It was a pretty serious injury, so you have to give him a lot of credit for coming back and playing.”

Damper for «Swiss Devils»

The Swiss faction of the New Jersey Devils started the NHL playoffs with a loss. The somewhat favored team around captain Nico Hischier loses 1:5 to the New York Rangers.

At the start of the best-of-7 series, neither Hischier, who impressed with 80 scorer points in qualifying, nor Timo Meier, who finished the regular season with a personal best of 40 goals, got going. The two leave the ice with a negative balance, as does defender Jonas Siegenthaler. 22-year-old goaltender Akira Schmid, who was recalled to the NHL team for the playoffs, remains on the bench.

The second game of the round of 16 series will again take place in New Jersey on Friday-evening.
