From the sickbed straight to the winner of the competition

Luca Cunti suffered from a gastrointestinal infection.

In game 1 of the final on Friday away in Geneva, Luca Cunti was the prominent absentee from EHC Biel’s line-up. And this, although he had made the journey to Calvinstadt. But on the way, the 33-year-old suddenly felt bad on the bus – his digestion was causing problems. “It came as thrown. At first I thought I ate something wrong and then it will be fine. But then there were other symptoms and it got worse and worse,” he says.

In this condition, of course, it was out of the question to use it. Instead, he boarded a train from Geneva and traveled back to Biel as quickly as possible. “It was a horror ride,” says Cunti. His wife then received him at the train station in Biel, “with the children asleep in the backseat”. He watched the game on TV as best he could under the circumstances. “I felt bad about it – and it had nothing to do with the game,” said Cunti.

Coke, pretzel sticks, soup and lots and lots of rice

He didn’t feel much better on Saturday. And on Sundays he usually takes it easy. “I was quickly in the stadium in the morning and in bed for the rest of the day.” Really not optimal conditions for a playoff battle for the national title. It is therefore almost unbelievable that he even became the competition winner. Cunti serves Damien Brunner both the 2:0 on the stick in the starting phase and the golden 3:2 7.4 seconds before the end.

“I really wanted to try it and I’m amazed that it works so well. In the first third it all came up again. But somehow I got by on coke, pretzel sticks and soup.” Furthermore, he had only eaten rice two days earlier, three plates on Saturday and two more on Sunday. “I’ve definitely had enough of rice now,” says Cunti, who can even laugh about it now.

Brunner is not surprised

It’s an incredible story. But nothing can surprise his buddy Damien Brunner anymore – he knows Cunti too long and too well: “If Luca gets up with the right foot, then even after a three-month break he can immediately be the best player on the ice – if he wants to .” He absolutely wanted to on Sunday night.
