Two tons of cocaine are hidden in these packages.

Italian police have found packages containing about two tons of cocaine in the sea off the coast of Sicily. The drugs, with a market value of more than 400 million euros, float on the water in 70 bundles tied together, the police reported on Monday. They were said to have been left at sea by a freighter to be picked up by drug smugglers and transported to the coast.

The packages, said to contain about 1,600 blocks of cocaine, were equipped with a tracking device and were spotted by a naval surveillance plane. According to the information, it is one of the largest drug finds in Italy.

Sicily is home to the Cosa Nostra, but the more powerful mafia organization is the ‘Ndrangheta from the southern Italian region of Calabria opposite Sicily. It controls large parts of cocaine smuggling to Europe.
