That’s Zion’s recipe for staying awake

Suddenly FC Sion scores regularly. Two wins against Lucerne and GC and a draw against Servette. None of the last three games were really fun. The Valaisers really don’t care. What counts are the points. In the end, goalkeeper Heinz Lindner demanded exactly that after the 0: 4 swatter in mid-March in Wankdorf in Bern: “We need a win now. It doesn’t matter if it’s played dirty or nicely.”

Against the standings, there is little to see from Sion for over half an hour. “We started badly. That should not happen again,” complains Reto Ziegler. In fact, Wallis only came into play after GC’er Meritan Shabani was sent off in the 39th minute. “If they make a mistake and see red, it’s not our fault. That’s the luck you need.” A goal shortly before and a goal shortly after the break finally heralded Sion’s victory.

“The good things will eventually come”

Ziegler knows why the necessary luck has tilted in the direction of Wallis in recent weeks. Coach David Bettoni is the reason. “He brought joy to the team and I really enjoy going to training. We work very hard under him, but always with a smile. And if you really believe in it and have fun together, good things will eventually come.”

The win over GC didn’t put Sion bottom of the table as Winterthur also won their game against St Gallen. A point separates the two clubs. Much more positive from Wallis’ point of view is the fact that they have the same number of points as FCZ and the Hoppers are only four points off 7th place. A few weeks ago they had five or nine points less than the city of Zurich.

Sion’s upward trend should continue into Lugano this Sunday. Just like in the Letzigrund, trainer Bettoni will also have to take a seat in the stands in the Cornaredo. Then he is serving his second of two suspensions he earned against Servette over Easter weekend when he threw a drinking bottle on the field in anger.
