For a long time it was uncertain who would train the Swiss sprint flagship in the future: after Adrian Rothenbühler stepped down as coach of the women’s sprint relay, Swiss Athletics found a new solution. Raphaël Monachon and Peter Haas act together as coaches.
It is a return for 50-year-old Monachon, who was Rothenbühler’s predecessor from 2018 to 2021. Under his leadership, the Swiss reached the top of the world with a 4th place at the 2019 World Championships in Doha and at the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The former hurdle sprinter is responsible for athletic development and therefore also for training design. In particular, Haas will take on planning and coordination tasks. The 68-year-old was head of competitive sports at Swiss Athletics from 2004 to 2018.
Most recently, Haas coached the women’s 4×400 meter relay. Kenny Guex, who is employed by Swiss Athletics as sprint/hurdles/relay head coach, will now take over this position.
The highlight of the coming season will be the World Championships in Budapest from 19 to 27 August. Thanks to reaching the final at the last World Cup, both women’s relays have already met the World Athletics qualification criteria. (SDA)
