Pulling your first carrots off the ground: a moment you’ll never forget. At least that’s what you think when you start chatting with one of the thousands of new “City Gardeners”. Gardening has long lost its finicky touch. Now a new generation of casual gardeners is starting to turn their balcony from a recycling bin into a mini vegetable farm. You don’t need much for a small garden. The “basics” are quickly bought: plant pots, soil, seeds.
According to the official planting calendar, the end of April would be the ideal time to plant tomato, onion, carrot and lettuce seedlings. Anyone without a natural green thumb should seek advice: Sunlight, water requirements and (organic) fertilizer all contribute to optimum harvests, but they must be in the right ratio. We’ll show you how to turn your balcony into a vegetable garden in no time.
It is one of the “easy” vegetables to grow on the balcony and is always successful. Important: Tomatoes should not be placed in balcony boxes, but in large pots (10 to 20 liters) – because tomatoes are heavy consumers and need a lot of nutrients for their rapid growth. Plants are frost sensitive and should only be placed on the balcony when no more frosts are expected.
Not only do they look decorative, they also give every dish the right spice: paprika. You need a lot of sun for your temper – shady balconies are not suitable for red spice talismans. It is best to plant in small pots and take them outside only after the last frost. Harvest time is usually from late August to early September. Peppers belong to the house in winter, they cannot withstand sub-zero temperatures.
With a little attention and patience, strawberries can be gnawed on the balcony all summer long. Important for this: plant different varieties that bear fruit at different times. Strawberries also thrive especially easily in flower boxes that stand or hang in sunny locations. The distance between plants should be at least 20 cm. So you can put 5 strawberry plants in a 1 meter box. The chosen location should not be too windy.
Like cucumbers and tomatoes, zucchini are supposedly heavy feeders that need nutrient-rich soil and produce a lot of leaf mass. Accordingly, a large bucket with space and a volume of about 15 to 20 liters should be planned for their planting. Otherwise, zucchini will thrive in sunny locations – water them regularly as they are so thirsty!
It actually makes sense: Carrots need deep enough veins to grow magnificently. In addition, good water permeability of the soil is useful – mix it with a little sand. If you always want to snack on small carrots, you can easily review them every few weeks. Early varieties such as “Dekora” or particularly decorative ones such as “Nutri-Red” (great play of colors) are particularly suitable for the balcony.
