Mexicans sharp – but Verstappen is sharper

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

Sergio Pérez wants the world title.

At the start, Pérez had no chance against Red Bull-Honda teammate and two-time world champion Max Verstappen (25), finished second twelve seconds behind the Dutchman with 36 wins – Pérez has four!

Only Pole in Saudi Arabia

Pérez: “The start cost me the fight for victory.” Sure, he was immediately overtaken by Leclerc (Ferrari), who gave him a little push. Later, Pérez broke his rubber every time he tried to overtake the Monegasque.

Well, this week he heads to the circuit in Jeddah, where Pérez has achieved his only pole position in 236 races to date! In the end he finished fourth, eleven seconds behind winner Verstappen.

Bottas dreamed for five years

For five years at Mercedes we heard the same song from Valtteri Bottas (33): “This time I feel like I can beat Lewis!” Well, the Finn was usually closer than Pérez is now in his third year alongside Verstappen. And Bottas’ conclusion at the end of 2021? “I have to admit, Hamilton is the better driver!”

It is not known when Pérez came to this conclusion. The Latin American must also deliver in 2023, because Red Bull-Honda has the most prominent third driver with Daniel Ricciardo (31).

Horner: “Checo has to be faster!”

How do you rate Pérez’s chances with the Bulls? Team boss Horner: “Max is probably the highest benchmark in Formula 1. Checo feels comfortable in the car with us. But he always has to give his best.” What should Perez change? Horner dry: “His lap times!” In close combat, he is one of the best.

Sports director Marko even compliments: “Now both drivers are happy with the car. Pérez is in good shape and we need that to win the Constructors’ Championship. It is a success for Checo that he is the first driver to enter his third year alongside Verstappen and not to split up as a result!”

The location of Russell and Sainz

And what about the two police hunters? At Mercedes, George Russell (25) is very close to Sir Lewis Hamilton (38). That mainly depends on the whims of the seven-time champion and 103-time GP winner. But without a win for 25 races.

At Ferrari, Sainz, who is clearly slower, recognized the situation before the tests: “I have to prove every lap in 2023 that I am on Charles! Otherwise, I risk the new boss making Vasseur my teammate number 1! »
