It would be her race. At the end of January, all eyes were on Petra Vlhova (28) in the giant slalom in Jasna. But in her home race, the Slovakian fell after just a few seconds and slipped into the safety net.
The shock diagnosis: cruciate ligament tear in the right knee, season over!
About two weeks after the fatal fall, the technical star traveled to Valais. There, specialist Dr. Olivier Siegrist operated. It’s the start of a long and arduous journey back to the slopes.
Vlhova’s sponsor Niké then documents the skier’s tough rehabilitation struggle. Insights about the days in Vlhova hospital are shared on the YouTube channel of the Slovak gambling operator. Scenes from her days in Switzerland also appear.
“It was very difficult that this had to happen to me especially in Jasna. My first thought was, ‘Why here?’” Vlhova says while discussing autumn in the documentary.
In the video she is guided every step of the way. From the flight to Switzerland to the conversation with Dr. Sigrist, until the recovery period after the operation. “I’m already making progress. It’s only the first day, but I think things are starting to look better now,” he said.
Your Swiss coach Mauro Pini sees an opportunity in this situation: “In these bad conditions there is also an opportunity to grow. Firstly as a person and secondly as an athlete,” the Swiss coach explains in the video.
At the end of the documentary, the Slovakian is already back on her feet, albeit with crutches. Still, she is inspired. “I am a fighter and I will fight until the end. I believe I will return to the slopes and win races again.”
