Blick: Pedro Lenz, there’s a lot going on at YB, surprised?
Pedro Lenz: Yes, it is not every day that the leader in Swiss football fires the coach. This is a new dimension.

Which also underlines the high standards that YB now applies. As a fan you have to like that.
On the one hand, I understand the club bosses who feel the sporting pressure and are afraid that they cannot win the championship this time. But then again, I feel sorry for Raphael Wicky.

What did Wicky do wrong?
I don’t think you can blame him much. With the departure of Ulisses Garcia and Jean-Pierre Nsame, the club has lost a lot of power in recent weeks. A match like the one against FCZ would probably have been filmed in the past. But there is also no shame in losing to Zurich.

But YB also lost at home to Servette, was eliminated in the cup against Sion and failed in the Europa League against Sporting. So there were already warning signs.
All Swiss clubs want to beat YB, which is the thankless role for the favorites that FC Basel used to have and that Bayern Munich always plays in Germany. You can also lose against Sion and Servette. And anyone who thinks YB should beat a team like Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League has no idea about football.

Couldn’t they have made a clean break with Wicky after the season?
It is clearly fashionable at the moment to announce the retirement of coaches early in the second half of the season rather than at the end of the season, as the examples of Thomas Tuchel at Bayern and Xavi Hernández at Barcelona show. I don’t think that’s good at all. These coaches can no longer really act and become lame ducks. Then it’s better to break up immediately, like now with Wicky.

Even if there is no successor yet?
YB cannot now propose a permanent successor. If he were to miss the championship in the summer, he would already be seriously injured before the new season. The solution with interim coach Joël Magnin is therefore logical.

The YB bosses kept Wicky in the dark about his future for a long time – too long?
Everyone felt that something was wrong. I can only assume they wanted to monitor the situation. Maybe the stress is eating Wicky away. Jürgen Klopp will also leave Liverpool at the end of the season. He needs a break because he’s burned out. That’s human nature in this hectic football world. But like I said, that’s just a guess.

Popular names are being traded as Wicky’s successors. Urs Fischer should also be a candidate.
Urs Fischer would certainly be interesting, but I don’t know if he would be a good fit for YB with his Basel and Zurich past and if we can even afford him financially. Hamlet would be hotter. He’s doing a great job at Servette. In any case, YB should behave more often like Bayern does.

What do you mean?
Taking the best people out of national competition and thereby weakening them.

Will YB become Swiss champions again despite the coaching quake?
Maybe also because of the trainer quake. I have confidence in the club management and think they have thought carefully about everything. Yes, YB will be champion again this season.
