Shortly before 6 a.m. on Saturday morning, the FIS announced: “Due to the large amounts of snow over the past 24 hours, today’s Super-G has been canceled.” The first of the two women’s speed races in Val di Fassa, Italy, cannot take place.

However, for athletes this does not mean that they can sleep in and have a quiet day. On the contrary. Alternatively, the Swiss women will complete giant slalom training in Pozza di Fassa, Beat Tschuor revealed when asked by Blick. There is also little free time left. “You train in the morning, then the program includes fitness training, physio or preparation for the next day,” explains the women’s head coach. In addition, there is the starting number draw in the evening.

“Part of their sport”

Despite the cancellation, the mood in the team is good. “They are professionals and know that canceling is part of their sport.” Even though the speed drivers are confronted with this for the sixth time this winter.

This also applies to Lara Gut-Behrami (32). She is denied the opportunity to extend the lead in two ball fights. In the overall World Cup she has 205 points ahead of her currently injured pursuer Mikaela Shiffrin (28). The American plans her comeback only for the technical races in Are, Sweden (March 9 and 10).

It is much tighter in the Super-G, where the Swiss’ lead over Cornelia Hütter (31, Austria) is only five points. No reason to worry for Tschoor. “It’s one race less, but nothing has been decided yet,” he says.

Confidence for Sunday

To increase Gut-Behrami’s points total on Sunday, more than 150 helpers are committed to everything on the track. Tschoor is confident that the second Super-G can be held. “It looks pretty good, the prognosis is stable,” he says.

Like everyone else, he was not allowed on the slopes. But he saw on television images that the new snow had already been cleared away. Now it is important to slide neatly, then the slope should be ready.
